Tell the barber what you want, or show a photo. Clippers for the sides and fade, scissors for the length on top, then a sharp line-up around the ears and neck.

Good for: Classic cuts, skin fades, tapers, crops.

Length taken down evenly, shape set to suit your face, cheek and neck lines cleaned up with a trimmer, and edges finished with a razor.

Good for: Growing it out, keeping it tidy, or matching it to a new cut.

Hot towel to open up the skin, lather worked in, a close pass with a straight razor, then a cold towel and balm to finish.

Good for: The closest shave you'll get, or a proper reset before an occasion.

Lines, parts and patterns cut into a fade freehand with a trimmer and razor. Bring a reference or describe it at the chair.

Good for: Adding something extra to a fade. Grows back in a couple of weeks.

Not a prop — it's parked between the chairs, same as it is most days. Mirrors, low pendant lights, a couch worth waiting on.
